The Naples of Bartolo Longo

This page is home to a gazetteer of sites in the city of Naples that were significant in the life of Bartolo Longo (1841-1926), founder of the Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary of Pompeii.

Bartolo Longo spent much of his life in the Valley of Pompeii, but Naples - as the nearest urban centre - was a constant point of reference for him. Longo studied for his Law degree in Naples, and it was here that he met key figures in nineteenth-century religion and politics. Naples was also where he met his wife and lifelong collaborator, the Countess Marianna Farnararo De Fusco (1836-1924), and where he acquired the famous image of Our Lady of Pompeii. He also did much of the fundraising and publicity for the Pompeii shrine in Naples, travelling back and forth by rail.

Over time, these gazetteer entries will be supplemented with photos and stories as I visit the sites - many of which are now much changed from the time of Bartolo Longo, or have even disappeared altogether. Eventually, I’ll put together a practical itinerary for those who want to visit some of these places in person.
